In the following post we talk about how you can find out about your company’s consumption
Currently, a large part of companies’ infrastructure costs is mainly due to electricity consumption. Indeed, at a certain size, control of your company’s consumption expenditure is lost. You don’t know anymore which machine is consuming what, or which floor is consuming more, or which building is consuming more per square meter. .
Besides, we’re not just talking about machinery. For example, in matters related to ISOs, in which the company needs to be monitored in order to justify its accreditation.
How can I monitor my business?
First of all, you should ask yourself, depending on how carefully you want to monitor, the following questions:
- Do I want to know the general consumption?
- Do I want to know the consumption of each line, for example lights or climate, or just certain rooms?
- Am I only interested in the consumption of a single device?
Once these questions have answered, we will be sure of the steps to be taken.
Below, we explain 3 basic ways of monitoring general consumption and some notes in case you want more specific lines.
1. Tele-calling
Probably the easiest and least tedious way. As it turns out, most meters have a modem inside that allows you to receive calls. So, there are devices that are able to call this meter and establish a communication, through, a protocol (usually IEC).
This enables consumption data to be asked from the meter. Once this is done, the devices save or send the data to where they are configured in different formats.
Where to get these devices?
These devices can be found in some specialized stores. However, the most economical option would be to hire a monitoring platform such as W-Manager. This type of software has devices of this kind configured and is in charge of managing tele-calls.

2. Reading device and modem
Sometimes meters do not have modems or do not allow tele-calling. Thus, another alternative would be the physical installation of a device capable of reading the meter. Once read, it would send the data to where we set it up.
The most used way to use these meters would be an optical reader that, connected to a modem, would be able to read it and send the pulses per second of that meter. Consulting the meter’s manual we would know how many pulses are equivalent to 1kWh.
3. Electric distributor
Finally, another solution would be to ask the electricity company or distributor to send the consumption curve. This would be another option to obtain your consumption profile for X days.
Here are 3 basic ways to find out about your company’s consumption However, in case you need the one of a specific line or device, we would look for an external device capable of measuring it. This choice would consist of connecting it to a data concentrator, getting the information and then sending it where it is needed.
In conclusion, the importance of collecting all these data lies in the possibility of graphing it and making analyses based on it. As a result of these analyses, it is possible to act accordingly and to achieve savings in consumption. In order to do this, platforms such as W-Manager would be needed to help in the decision making process, otherwise all this information would not contribute anything of value to our company.
