Wattabit launches W-City: our Smart Cities management platform (CMS)
All cities that aim to become Smart Cities face the same challenges: advanced smart lighting, pollution management, parking slots and energy consumption of public buildings, and other services that are focused on improving the quality of life of its inhabitants. This is what CMS or Central Management System are for. CMS are software platforms to manage intelligent systems that are integrated with the technological infrastructures of the cities.
Smart Cities and IoT
Since the 1990s, the momentum of technology has facilitated and opened new horizons over cities. Smart cities are intimately related to the use of technology and the powerful weapons it offers us.
In short, it is the combination of people, technology and creativity to make any city in the world more sustainable and efficient.

What a CMS is for
A CMS is a platform that aggregates data from different IoT devices for intelligent management of city elements and operations, for instance, lighting optimization, detection of environmental alarms, detection and subsequent repair of broken elements…
Just by managing lighting, you can achieve significant energy saving at a global level. The use of automatic controls that allow the light to be turned off when no one is present or regulated based on external factors provide an additional 20% to 40% saving of overall energy use. Another important benefit of a CMS concerns maintenance costs and operation: having real-time information and alarms when a streetlight is consuming less than it should at that time.
W-City, a way to understand and manage the needs of a Smart City
Initially designed for street lighting management, Wattabit’s CMS becomes W-City. Based on experience in different projects, we launch W-City as a new open platform that integrates new monitoring and management capabilities of other infrastructures of the city such as Electric Vehicle charging points, noise and environment sensors, poles smart poles, etc.
In public lighting projects, W-City expands its previous capabilities:
- Peer-to-peer regulation through calendars and radio frequency technology in 6LoWPAN meshed networks
- Light point tracking alarms
- Maintenance work orders are generated by these alarms
- Expands the list of integrated protocols: Lora and Sigfox
- Integration with third-party software (GMAOs, ERPs, billing tools)
