Softwares like W-City integrate perfectly with the platform designed by Barcelona City Council Sentilo

Sentilo is an open source platform sponsored by Barcelona City Council. It is also designed to adapt to the level of sensors and actuators of any city in a simple way. This fact is what allows it to enter the world of Smart Cities.

And what do we mean when we say it’s an open source platform? This implies that the application’s development is managed by an active and diverse community. This means that this community expands functionality and behavior based on its own needs. Thus, corporate decisions do not depend on a single company.

Is Sentilo enough for my city?

The answer would be: it depends. Today there are millions of sensors and actuators distributed around the world and this number of devices is increasing every day. These sensors could be integrated with Sentilo if the wanted, since as we have mentioned it is open source, and the way to integrate is public.

This integration makes the Sentilo information database grow, so it may be that in your city you already have a good sensor infrastructure that allows you to see their status. Thus, all you have to do is activate a Sentilo instance in your city and use these sensors to analyze it.

Despite this interesting proposal, in most cases the infrastructure remains insufficient and when collecting information from third-party sensors, it is not possible to ensure the proper functioning of this or the reliability of your data.

Because of this, platforms such as W-City are still needed, as they are focused on much more thorough and detailed control than a generic platform. In addition, it makes possible custom developments for each city without relying on other actors, the use of virtually any type of device and many more features.

What does “integrating with Sentilo” mean?

The fact that Sentilo is open-source means that the necessary documentation for scheduling device shipments to your platform is public. In this way, you can have the data that a sensor captures sent to your databases.

However, it is likely that one of these devices is not capable of sending this data to Sentilo. Thus, platforms such as W-City come into play and can be integrated into almost any device. W-City uses different protocols for this and, once it has acquired the data, it sends it back to Sentilo. In short, the platform itself becomes a sensor that contains information from many sensors.
