The City of Marrakech embraces COP 22 Agreements
The City of Marrakech together with Public Entity Société d’Investissements Energétiques awarded Wattabit and its partner Enertika with tender for the biggest energy efficiency project ever granted in Morocco.
This project scope consists in the retrofitting of up to 60.000 public light points throughout Marrakech city. In two years, all light points will be switched to LED lighting. The awarded tender also includes a 10-year contract for the remote monitoring and control of the installation, together with the maintenance and energy management of the public lighting system.
Some of the key advantages that Wattabit technology brings to the successful realisation of energy and economic savings include:
Replacing a legacy street lighting system with LEDs can reduce a municipality’s energy bill by half. Integrating those lights with networking and intelligent controls can provide a further 30% in savings—and provide a platform for current and future Smart City applications that can enhance public safety, traffic management, health, comfort, and more.
- Real time fraud detection and prevention (it represents a 20% of the public lighting system’s energy bill)
- Optimized and digitalized O&M activities based on data analysis
This technology is therefore set to play a key central role in the transition to a low carbón prosperous global economy.
This technology also offers cities an opportunity to deploy a range of solutions that can save money, keep residents safe, improve sustainability, and attract new people and businesses.
From Smart Street Lighting to full-scale Smart City
Together with the Smart lighting project Wattabit has included the implementation of a pilot project for Smart City integrating:
- Smart Mobility: systems for traffic control and management.
- Electric Mobility: Pilot project for electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, and a public bicycle system.
- Waste management: Smart waste collection through sensors placed in containers.
- Security installation and control of a public CCTV system.
- Smart Water control: real time metering and control of the water public infrastructure for leakage and fault detection.
In addiction, the project includes a program to raise awareness amongst Marrakech Inhabitants on the benefits of energy efficiency linked to Wattabit’s real time data displayed through screens strategically located throughout the city.
